Field Trips - The format of these field trips is to sample / survey the arachnid fauna at the site. These trips offer the opportunity to learn and practice field collection techniques, to identify live spiders, as well as taking sample specimens for subsequent ID confirmation and recording. Species records will be fed back to the respective site managers / recorders and submitted to the national Spider and Harvestman Recording Schemes.

Please bring any equipment if you have any (sweep nets, pooters, collecting tubes / pots, hand lenses, Robert's Field Guide, etc), otherwise equipment can be provided. Beginners and newcomers are very welcome.

These field trips are aimed at a full day (10am - 5pm) so bring a packed lunch. Lifts may be available, just ask. Of course, you don't have to come for the full day, maybe just a couple of hours, but try to join us at the start, otherwise we may be difficult to find later on!

This will become a regular field trip, as this is a large easy access site with a variety of habitats.

We'll meet by the lakeside, in front of the cafe (next to the car park).

Field Meeting - Loch Lomond RSPB Reserve - Sunday 9th June

(High Wards Farm, South end of loch between Balloch and Drymen)

The RSPB has recently acquired a reserve at Loch Lomond and are interested in any spider records we can provide. Apparently there are some either exciting or dubious records from the late 70s, so would be great to check the site out.

I have arranged to meet the warden in the morning, about 10.30 and she will show us around the site.

If you would like to come, let me know and I can send you location details etc. We can try to organise car share if necessary.

Field Trip - Windyhills, Fyvie - Saturday 15th June

10:30am-3.30pm

Windyhills (NJ797397) is a designated Geological Site of Special Scientific Interest. Most of the site is long established pine woodland of plantation origin but there are a range of other habitats including other types of woodland, gorse scrub, a pond and exposed quarry faces. In addition, we have access to the hall where we intend to set up a range of microscopes for general use and in the event of poor weather. We will convene at the hall at 10.30am for a general introduction to the site. Please bring a packed lunch and any collecting equipment (although we can provide some).

Windyhills is owned by the Woodhead & Windyhills Community Trust. The site is located in the village of Woodhead, 2 miles from Fyvie, on the B9005 (Fyvie to Methlick Road). There is a car park available behind Woodhead Community Centre.
